Analyticity of the Susceptibility Function for Unimodal Markovian Maps of the Interval

In a previous note [Ru] the susceptibility function was analyzed for some examples of maps of the interval. The purpose of the present note is to give a concise treatment of the general unimodal Markovian case (assuming ff real analytic). We hope that it will similarly be possible to analyze maps satisfying the Collet-Eckmann condition. Eventually, as explained in [Ru], application of a theorem of Whitney [Wh] should prove differentiability of the map fρff\mapsto\rho_f restricted to a suitable set.Comment: 8 page

Surface flux transport modeling for solar cycles 15--21: effects of cycle-dependent tilt angles of sunspot groups

We model the surface magnetic field and open flux of the Sun from 1913 to 1986 using a surface flux transport model, which includes the observed cycle-to-cycle variation of sunspot group tilts. The model reproduces the empirically derived time evolution of the solar open magnetic flux, and the reversal times of the polar fields. We find that both the polar field and the axial dipole moment resulting from this model around cycle minimum correlate with the strength of the following cycle.Comment: Accepted for publication by Ap

Effects of topological edge states on the thermoelectric properties of Bi nanoribbons

Using first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the effects of topological edge states on the thermoelectric properties of Bi nanoribbons. It is found that there is a competition between the edge and bulk contributions to the Seebeck coefficients. However, the electronic transport of the system is dominated by the edge states because of its much larger electrical conductivity. As a consequence, a room temperature value exceeding 3.0 could be achieved for both p- and n-type systems when the relaxation time ratio between the edge and the bulk states is tuned to be 1000. Our theoretical study suggests that the utilization of topological edge states might be a promising approach to cross the threshold of the industrial application of thermoelectricity
